Friend/Enemy

Friend/Enemy were a short-lived indie rock project created by Tim Kinsella and Todd Mattei, lasting between 2001 and 2002. Both of them were also members of Joan of Arc at the time. If you're familiar with that band (and Owls to an extent), the strangeness of this project will come as no shock to you. The foundation of these songs were laid down by the aforementioned members, and then a ton of collaborators would come in and add density to these tracks. Other contributors include bassist Sam Zurick (a regular in the Cap'n Jazz/Owls/Joan of Arc collective), and even Zach Hill on drums (of Hella and Death Grips notoriety), among others. Sonically, this project is very experimental, dipping into elements of math rock, jazz, prog, and indie, all beneath Kinsella's distinct vocal stylings and storytelling. In addition, there's an array of sounds in the mix here in addition to standard rock instrumentation, such as a banjo and a bunch of percussion. It's an interesting album undoubtedly, and highly recommended to fans who lean more towards the stranger side on the strange/sad Kinsella spectrum. Enjoy.

Fury

Fury are a five-piece hardcore punk band from Orange County, California that formed in 2014. Their sound is pretty clearly rooted in early youth crew hardcore, such as Youth Of Today. Their songs are straight up, aggressive, and to the point (as their name would suggest), with the positive outlook gang chant vocals to top it all off. Fury do an excellent job of preserving the raw power of this sound, while still giving it a refreshing new energy, and not just rehashing old tropes. Their debut LP, Paramount, came out last year on Triple B Records, which really pushed this band to a whole new level. While they were an excellent hardcore band before, this album takes the sound of hardcore punk and pushes it to its full extent, in a forward-thinking way, like a band such as Turning Point did. It's made a ton of waves, and it rightfully should. Unfortunately I'm a little late to the punch in posting this, but it's definitely one of the most noteworthy hardcore releases in recent years. Enjoy.

Elvis Depressedly

Elvis Depressedly are a two-piece lo-fi/indie rock band from Asheville, North Carolina that formed in 2011. Initially formed by vocalist/guitarist Mathew Lee Cothran (also of Coma Cinema), the project now includes drummer/keyboardist Delaney Mills. As their name suggests, they aren't the sunniest of soundtracks. With a decidedly lo-fi recording aesthetic, their drone-y, atmospheric sound ultimately clouds what are, at their core, indie pop songs. They're rounded off by some lonely chords, light percussion and despondent vocals, which all contribute to creating their distinct landscape.

The band's earliest material was self-released. Following the EP Holo Pleasures released on Birdtapes, they signed to Run For Cover Records and released New Alhambra. This was followed by a RFC re-release of Holo Pleasures, which also included a previously recorded/unreleased EP California Dreamin'. Elvis Depressedly has, without a doubt, been one of the most highly requested bands I have yet to post. Thus, they were an easy pick for one of the last bands to cover before 2018 hits. Enjoy.

Some Girls

Some Girls were a five-piece hardcore band from San Diego, California that formed in 2002 and broke up in 2007. Their members had all been previously established in other very notable bands, including vocalist Wesley Eisold (American Nightmare/Give Up The Ghost, and Cold Cave post-Some Girls), bassist Justin Pearson (The Locust, Swing Kids), guitarist Rob Moran (bassist in Unbroken, Over My Dead Body), and guitarist Chuck Rowell (The Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower), among others. Stylistically, they played spastic, frantic, noisy hardcore that's heavy on the blast beats and speeds through each song carrying an unrelenting, convulsing dissonance. Notable comparisons can be made to Daughters and The Blood Brothers, though the individual members past projects are probably the best indication of what to expect with this project.

The band's discography consists of only three essential releases. The compilation All My Friends Are Going Death was released in 2004 by Deathwish. This includes their first two EP's (The Rains and The Blues), as well as some demo material. Their next EP, The DNA Will Have Its Say was put out in 2005 by Pearson's own Three One G Records. Their final release was their sole full-length, Heaven's Pregnant Teens, on Epitaph Records. Following the dissolution of this band, all members have stayed active in both their older and newer projects. Enjoy.

Ten Yard Fight

Ten Yard Fight were a five-piece hardcore band from Boston, Massachusetts that formed in 1995 and broke up in 1999. Along with other Boston bands such as In My Eyes, they were a major factor in the revitalization of youth crew and straight edge in their era. Additionally, Ten Yard Fight were known for their football influence (the American kind, sport not band). They would occasionally play shows decked out in football gear, and some lyrics touched upon the sport. For the most part though, what they are remembered for is their passion and energy, which exploded in a relatively short of span, and across a handful of solid releases.

Big Black

Big Black were a three-piece post-hardcore/noise rock band from Evanston, Illinois (though closely related to Chicago) that were around from 1981 to 1987. To say they were influential is an understatement, since they were a monumental band in the worlds of punk, post-hardcore, noise rock, post-punk, alternative rock, and even industrial. The band was spearheaded by guitarist/vocalist Steve Albini, who has been a major figure in underground rock for a long time. He's obviously known for Big Black, as well as his current band Shellac. In addition, he's got an extensive list of production credits, most notably The Pixies' Surfer Rosa, Nirvana's In Utero, the first few Jesus Lizard albums, and has worked with a ton of other incredible artists ranging from Joanna Newsom to Neurosis. To bring the focus back to Big Black; their other guitarist was Santiago Durango, who was an early member of Naked Raygun, but left to focus on Big Black. Their original bassist was Naked Raygun vocalist Jeff Pezzati, who only played on the band's second EP Bulldozer before leaving to focus on his other band. After he left, Big Black's line-up was finalized with bassist Dave Riley, who stayed with the band until their end in 1987. Of course, there is one more constant member who can't go unmentioned, and that is "Roland". This is the short-form used to credit a Roland TR-606 drum machine on their releases. Big Black were known for their strong DIY ethic (booking their own tours, recording their own albums, etc.), essentially doing everything they could to avoid working with outside contracts. In addition, they also had a close relationship with the legendary Touch and Go Records, who put out most of their material when the label was just starting out.

Big Black began by Albini when he wrote and recorded their first EP, Lungs, entirely on his own. He was joined soon after by Durango and Pezzati for the Bulldozer EP in 1983. After Dave Riley took over for Pezzati, the EP Racer-X was released in 1984. Following years of heavy touring and a handful of releases, Big Black released what truly makes this band legendary. 1986's Atomizer is their first full-length, and an absolute classic. The band came through with an incredible set of songs that demonstrate the ferocity that they have come to craft (particularly their magnum opus, "Kerosene"). Their guitars sound more like clanking metal, thanks to the metal-tipped picks they used. Their beats are menacingly mechanical, which are matched by distorted, oddly grooving bass lines. Lyrically, their songs touch on the finer things in life, which include (but not limited to): pryomania, child sex rings, domestic abuse, torture murder, rape, sadism, and alcoholism. They certainly weren't afraid to delve into darker themes. The band decided to call it quits the year later, wanting to quit while they were ahead (and they were well ahead). Before they ended, they decided to record one more album. This became Songs About Fucking, which is (debatably) better than Atomizer. It's another slew of perfect, distraught tracks, that seethe between their clenched teeth. In addition to obvious essentials like "Bad Penny" and "Colombian Necktie", they also included a Kraftwerk cover and tacked on a Cheap Trick cover at the end, which is an odd discrepancy. Regardless, with their two full-lengths behind them, Big Black broke up and cemented their legacy as an inscrutably influential band. They did briefly reunite in 2006 to play a small set at a Touch & Go anniversary show, however that is their only activity since their break-up. Their full discography is below, except for two compilations, which I don't have but all the material on them is included below on separate releases. Enjoy.

Ok, so I've got one more post to make before the year's out. Today (December 29, 2017) marks the final day of this band's existence, since they've decided to burn out instead of fade away. Their final show is tonight, and their last album was released last year. This band has had an insane career throughout their 20 year existence, marked by numerous line-up changes, explosive live shows, and consistently hard-hitting, forward-thinking albums. Without a doubt they are one of the greatest, most progressive and influential bands in hardcore and metal, and this is the perfect time to look back at the amazing work that solidified their legacy. Without further ado, The Dillinger Escape Plan. 1997-2017.

Slint

Slint are a four-piece post-rock/math rock/indie rock band from Louisville, Kentucky who were originally around from 1986 to 1990. Since then, they've reformed briefly in 1992, 1994, 2005, 2007, 2013 and 2014. Their discography is very small, consisting of two full-lengths and an EP, only one of which was actually put in their initial tenure together. Despite this, Slint are one of the most important and influential bands in rock. This is chiefly due to their seminal sophomore album, Spiderland. It is often cited as one of, if not the first, post-rock albums ever.

Slint emerged out of another band called Squirrel Bait, who had more in common with Hüsker Dü than anything Slint released. Their first album, Tweez, was recorded in 1987 with Steve Albini, and released in 1989. This album featured the noisy, angular, and droning qualities that they would become best remembered for, though in a less profound capacity to its successor. By no means is it a bad album, though, and bridges the gap between the noisy, post-punk sound of their origins and the barren plain of sonic distress that would follow. This was the album actually released while they were still a band, and just like them, was relatively unknown until after they had broken up.

Spiderland was recorded in 1990 and posthumously released in 1991 by Touch And Go Records. The approach to recording this was simple, with songs being captured nearly-live. This lends itself to the sparse, minimalist sound that has become its trademark. This album features these angular, trebly, winding guitar parts that form the foundations of the songs, while the rest of the band slowly builds up behind them, resulting in distorted, catastrophic climaxes in unusual time signatures. They're somehow both melodic and dissonant, creating an atmosphere as bleak as the now-iconic photo on the cover. Vocally, they alter between quiet, spoken word passages, often exploring a narrative in great detail, and loud shouts during the climatic bits. The drawn-out, dynamic song structures, and use of rock instrumentation in a very un-traditional rock sound is why this album is often acknowledged as the first "post-rock" album. It also sets the trend of the genre sounding like apocalypse music. The influence can certainly be heard in the genre's titans, such as Tortoise or Mogwai, and even extends to other sects of rock, with Unwound being a good example. Spiderland continues to be heralded as a milestone in rock, and for good reason. This is absolutely essential, and highly, highly recommended both for historical purposes and for sheer enjoyment.

Members of Slint have also been active in some other notable projects. Many of them also played in another band called King Kong, at different times. Guitarist David Pajo was also a member of Tortoise, and played on their classic albums Millions Now Living Will Never Die and TNT. He has also been a touring member of Interpol, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Stereolab, in addition to being active in a ton of other projects. Drummer Britt Walford was a member of The Breeders, and played on their debut record Pod (under the pseudonym "Shannon Doughton"). Enjoy.

What a hell of a way to kick the year off. awakebutstillinbed are a four-piece emo/indie/punk band from San Jose, California. Their debut album, the TWIABP-esque titled what people call low self-esteem is really just seeing yourself the way that other people see you came out on January 3rd of this year. I'm not even sure where to begin with this. This is an undoubtedly fantastic album, with top notch songwriting and great instrumentation. They play a punk'd-up version of midwest emo, with the bright guitars and sweet melodies of Rainer Maria being a definite influence, and in their most punched-up moments they recall Cap'n Jazz and even teeter on I Hate Myself. But where this band really excels is in the personality they exude in every song. For one, the vocals are very charismatic, conveying personal reflections in every dynamic range imaginable. For such depressing subject matter, they sure do make some fun as hell music. They've got their own voice, and aren't afraid to scream, shout, or whisper to get what they have to say across. If this is the bar set for emo this year, then we are in for the greatest year the genre's seen in a long time. Enjoy.

Terry Green are a four-piece screamo/post-hardcore band from Mississauga (Toronto), Ontario that formed in 2014. After an EP and split under their belt, they put out an incredible LP last year that I cannot recommend enough for fans of screamo goodness. They play a very progressive blend of the genre that displays their technical ability in addition to raw catharsis. This includes lengthy instrumental passages with influence culled from every great faction of screamo. If you like a little melody in your chaos, or are a fan of bands like Daitro, Kidcrash or The Reptilian, this is highly recommended. Enjoy.

Foxtails are a three-piece emo/screamo band from Connecticut that have been around since at least 2015. They play a very technical style of emo that borders on math rock, with some dizzying fretboard work on bright guitars, and some very athletic drumming. They've got some very impressive dynamic shifts, going from melodic, quiet passages with softly sung vocals to screamed, bombastic moments. Utilizing off-kilter rhythms, odd song structures and time signatures, as well as never shying away from dissonance to create unease in the calmer moments, Foxtails have showed that they are not only incredible musicians, but have crafted a sound that is truly their own. Their last album, III came out last year on Emo Cat Records, and is unfortunately something I've slept on until now. Highly, highly, recommended. Enjoy.

Basic White are a four-piece band from London, Ontario who play that old time rock n roll. Their debut EP, Long Time Comin', came out in November 2016. This thing is five tracks of killer hooks and riffs, complimented by some slick leads and blues-tinged rhythms. Fans of other great Canadian rock bands such as The Trews or Sam Roberts will definitely see the appeal here. They've got a fantastic kick-back and let loose energy to them, which really translates well in a live setting. Check out their latest video for the song "Glory Years" below. If it suits ya fancy, I definitely recommend picking up the full EP, which is available below and well worth the listen. Enjoy!

"Please let me keep this memory. Just this one."

Year 6 of this lonely and despaired tradition. Another screamo soundtrack to wallow in. Valentrine's Day 2018, a day of romance and lovers. Not that you'd know anything about that. Thus you are left to scourge every sorrowful moment, every lonely Sunday morning, every pain in your half-burnt heart, and every reminder of when things were better. Might as well listen to some decent tunes while you do it. This year we've got the fantastic Kite Flying Society to do so, and I'll leave links to all previous years in the comments if you want to deepen the wound.

Kite Flying Society were a five-piece screamo band from Orlando, Florida that were around from at least 2000 to 2002 (any more info would be appreciated). They played an impassioned style of screamo akin to bands such as Saetia or You And I. In their chaos and dissonance, there are definite signs of melody here, albeit brief ones. Vocally, they are absolutely scorching, but also made heavy use of spoken word bits, which harken back to Moss Icon in the fragmented delivery atop arpeggiated guitars. Their discography, like many of their contemporaries, is fairly scattered. They released 2 EP's in their lifetime, and recorded a handful of other tracks that were never released. That is, until their full discography was compiled in 2006 by Init Records. Their discography is below, which includes all their EP material, some unreleased/demo tracks, as well as some live stuff. Doesn't get much better than this on days like today. All apologies and smiles, yours truly, ugly Valentine. Enjoy.

Foxtails / Algae Bloom SPLIT PREMIERE

It's the first day of spring, and with the changing of the seasons comes this split from two incredible bands. Connecticut's Foxtails and Norwich's Algae Bloom come through with 6 new tracks of material out today. This is a split release between Nothing Feels Good (US), Adorno Records (UK), and Damn Fine Tapes (EU).

Foxtails bring 2 tracks to the table, featuring their unique brand of technical screamo, with clean, dissonant instrumentation and maniacal, haunting vocals. Just listen to the throat-shrieking climax of "Cucaracho" to hear everything incredible about this band. Algae Bloom bring this split home with the final 4 tracks. They come through with a warm, fret-frenzied style of midwestern emo that teeters between melancholic and melodic. Vocally, they top it off with some hoarse screaming, giving these would-be calm songs a shot of incredible desperation. The highlight on their side would probably have to be those syncopated breaks on "Understanding In Negative", though this whole split is nothing short of awesome.

You can listen to it at the link below or you can pick up the cassette via Nothing Feels Good or Damn Fine Tapes!

2. foxtails - Cucaracho
3. algae bloom - How Are You?

Second Story Window

Second Story Window (not to be confused with the band From A Second Story Window) were a four-piece hardcore/emo band from Del Mar, California that were from 1993 to 1995. They only put one EP and one LP, both of which were on the legendary Gravity Records. Along with their labelmates such as Heroin and Antioch Arrow, Second Story Window are often credited as being a pioneering screamo band, and share a lot of commonalities with the aforementioned bands. If you dig the noisy, aggressive shrieking of those bands, with a bizarrely melodic tinge, you will undoubtedly like this. Enjoy.

Benton Falls

Benton Falls were a three-piece (originally four-piece) emo/indie band from Santa Rosa, California that formed in 2000 and broke up in 2010. They released two incredible full-length records, as well as a compilation of previously unreleased material, all on Deep Elm Records. Sonically, Benton Falls took their cues from the great emo bands of the decade that preceded them, such as Sunny Day Real Estate and Braid. They utilized quiet, twisting, clean arpeggios, moody, melodic vocals, and explosive build-ups of furious, distorted octave chords and screamed vocals. Their songwriting is top-notch, and they really hit the melancholic note that the genre is renowned for. This band is highly, highly recommended for any fan of that classic emo sound that obviously influenced its current revival. Quick side note, guitarist/vocalist Michael Richardson was a member of The Jealous Sound during their last few years of existence. Enjoy.

Jejune

Jejune were a three-piece (later four-piece) emo/indie band that were around from 1996 to 2000. They originally formed in Boston when all its members attended the Berklee College Of Music, but moved to San Diego in 1997. They played an energetic style of emo at the beginning of their career that can be loosely compared to bands like Jawbreaker, Christie Front Drive or early Jimmy Eat World (who they put out a split with). As they progressed, they began to develop a jangly-pop song, featuring clean bright guitars. Into the mid to late stages of their career, they start taking influence from elements of shoegaze, most notably in the heavily distorted guitars and reverberated vocals. They are also known for the interplayed, dual vocals, which had a knack for harmony and some striking melodies. Overall, this band isn't nearly as well-known as they should be, and definitely stand out among their "emo" contemporaries as being truly unique. Highly. highly recommended. Enjoy.

Worst Ever Party are a four-piece indie/emo/punk band from Sarasota, Florida that formed sometime around 2014. They broke up temporarily near the end of 2016, but are now back with a new album in the works. These guys play an incredibly fun, energetic, bedroom-demo style of music. They're catchy as hell, with fantastic lyrics built around personal anecdotes. Some of it's acoustic, some of it is full-band. They bear a striking resemblance to very early The Front Bottoms, which is an absolute compliment, as well as Modern Baseball and Mom Jeans. Fans of those bands absolutely need to check this out, they won't be disappointed. They've released a couple of EP's thus far, as well as Anthology, which contains a good chunk of their recorded material up until now. I'd suggest starting there. Enjoy.
